Monaghan County Library 'One Book, One County' Initiative

5th Class took part in a wonderful reading initiative run by Monaghan County Library called 'One Book, One County'.  The main aim of the initiative is to encourage as many pupils in different schools throughout the county to read a chosen book at the same time. The book chosen this year was 'A Winter of Spies' by Gerard Whelan, the sequel to 'The Guns of Easter'. Suzanne Graham, Monaghan County Library supplied 5th class with copies of the novel which is set in Dublin in 1920. The story focuses on Ireland's struggle for independence, led by Michael Collins. It tells of a time in ireland when not only did guns engage everyday lives but spies, lies and secrets were commonplace.

Monaghan County Library, facilitated by Suzanne Graham, arranged for Michael Moylan to visit the school this morning. Michael specialises in fun and interactive workshops where pupils are encouraged to dress in appropriate costumes and army uniforms of that time. He brought an array of weaponry with him which the pupils handled and informed the class of ballastics. It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning. Many thanks to Suzanne and Monaghan County Library and to Michael for his entertaining account of 1920's history in Ireland.
