Junior Infants Walk to the Fair Green June 2018

As part of Active Schools Week, we like to include an historical walk in the area which encourages our pupils to look at their surroundings and learn about their locality. There are many interesting places of historical interest within walking distance so we regularly encourage classes to walk there making contact with not just the natural but the historical outdoors of their area. Junior Infants walked to the Fair Green on Scotstown to see the Village Pump. They rested under the shade of the beautiful old Horse Chestnut tree which overshadows the pump. The pump, which is over a well, was fully operational until the 70s when it was disconnected and it is hoped it will be restored in the future development plans for the village. The village green itself held a Fair Day on the 17th of each month. Vegetable plants were sold in front of the pump. Cattle were shown on the green, in front of Beggan's house which can be clearly seen in some photos, and up as far as McCague's pub. Years ago all pubs in Ireland closed on St Patrick's Day except Scotstown village which was granted a special license to open on that day as the Fair would be held on the Green. However, the publican wasn't allowed to trade from his or her normal premises but from an outhouse or shed. Horses were shown in Moyna's yard and pigs in front of where Ann McAree's house is now in the village.
