Engineers Week 2018 Before Storm Emma
Engineers Week took place from February 24th to March 2nd. Unfortunately it was short by Storm Emma. However many classes had an opportunity to engage in fun challenges which helps create a positive awareness and spark enthuasiasm about the engineering profession in young people.
The engineering design process is a series of steps that engineeres follow to come up with a solution to a problem. Many times the solution involves designing a product. The basic steps in the engineering design process:
- Identify the problem. (ASK)
- Brainstorm solutions. (IMAGINE)
- Design, build and test a model. (PLAN AND CREATE)
- Use results to improve the model. (MAKE IT BETTER)
In some classes, pupils designed and constructed buildings and infrastructure using spaghetti and marshmallows. Others enjoyed making, breaking and designing paper bridges. Some classes had fun with the Egg Drop Challenge using various materials to design a secure egg cradle. Engineers are naturally curious to see how things work so our pupils enjoyed discovering what protected the egg when dropped. Junior classes tried the Paper Plane Challenge or followed cards with requests for specific constructions. See the images from Engineers Week below.
