Sports Day June 2021
Sports Day was held on Monday, 14th June and marked the start of Actitve Schools Week 2021. For the Senior Infants, this was truly a special occasion as Covid-19 school closure last year in 2020 meant they didn't experience Sports Day. Thankfully we could proceed safely this year and have a fun day.
Junior Infants to 2nd class used the facilities on the school premises while 3rd class to 6th class were on the Scotstown GFC grounds. Stations were marked out for each event and teams moved seamlessly to each activity when the horn was blown. The activities for the seniors ranged from an obstacle course, indoor soccer, Gaelic, Olympic handball, Tug of War, Rounders, hurdles, relays, novelty races including egg and spoon races and sack races to skittles. The junior classes had a variety of activities to experience also and you can see from the many images below that it was a most enjoyable day. Many thanks to Mrs Lavelle for organising and coordinating the day's very active event and to the volunteers who helped on the day. Thanks also to Scotstown GFC for the use of their facilities for Sports Day 2021.

Junior Infants Walk to the Fair Green June 2018
As part of Active Schools Week, we like to include an historical walk in the area which encourages our pupils to look at their surroundings and learn about their locality. There are many interesting places of historical interest within walking distance so we regularly encourage classes to walk there making contact with not just the natural but the historical outdoors of their area. Junior Infants walked to the Fair Green on Scotstown to see the Village Pump. They rested under the shade of the beautiful old Horse Chestnut tree which overshadows the pump. The pump, which is over a well, was fully operational until the 70s when it was disconnected and it is hoped it will be restored in the future development plans for the village. The village green itself held a Fair Day on the 17th of each month. Vegetable plants were sold in front of the pump. Cattle were shown on the green, in front of Beggan's house which can be clearly seen in some photos, and up as far as McCague's pub. Years ago all pubs in Ireland closed on St Patrick's Day except Scotstown village which was granted a special license to open on that day as the Fair would be held on the Green. However, the publican wasn't allowed to trade from his or her normal premises but from an outhouse or shed. Horses were shown in Moyna's yard and pigs in front of where Ann McAree's house is now in the village.
Active School Week 2017
Active School Week took place in S.N. Iorball Sionnaigh from Monday 12th - Friday 16th June 2017. ASW was a busy week with lots of enjoyable activities. Well done to all the children and parents who made an effort to walk/cycle to school.
Monday
All classes took part in a skipathon. We skipped using hoops or ropes all day on Monday. Each class played their part taking a 30/40 minute slot. Some children used ropes and others used hoops.
Tuesday
We were very excited on Tuesday morning as we knew that we were going to learn some tennis skills. Deidre Winters visited our school and provided some useful skills to us. It was great fun! Thank you, Deidre.
Wednesday
On Wednesday each class went on a history/nature walk in the locality. Mrs Meehan's fourth classs took their bikes to school. Martin Connolly from Killylough Cycling Club came in to talk to them. He spoke about cycling safely, the importance of wearing a helmet and he showed them how to change a tyre. Thank you, Martin.
Thursday
We couldn't wait for Thursday to come. Each class had previously carried out a penalty shoot out with their classmates and had chosen the top boy and girl. The whole school gathered together on the top yard. It was time for penalties against the principal. It was very exciting! Well done to Conor Keenan and Katie Mullen who emerged victorious.
